Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

Colleagues from the University of Pikeville will share selections from their original creative work. The University of Pikeville is in the eastern-most edge of Kentucky. Each faculty member's work reflects the involvement, perspectives, culture, and contexts they bring to this region and experience in the region. Each presenter will share selections of poetry or prose and offer an opportunity for discussion after all the readings.

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #1

A native of the New River Valley, J. Michael King earned his Ph.D. at Virginia Tech and his masters degrees in Counseling and in English at Radford University. He currently serves as an associate professor in the education division at the University of Pikeville.

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #2

Basil B. Clark is Associate Professor of Speech and Theatre at the University of Pikeville [KY]. In 2007, 2008 he wrote a DVD script, and played the part of Dr. Thomas Walker in the DVD, Mars Invasion 2030; Coal Camp to Space Camp. It is part of an approved curriculum for 4th graders which coordinates with the Mars Invasion 2030 program at the Challenger Learning Center of Hazard, KY.

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #3

Sydney England is a native eastern Kentuckian whose family has lived in the surrounding areas of central Appalachia since just after the Revolutionary War. She is Associate Professor of English who has taught composition at the University for fifteen years.

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #4

Amanda Jo Runyon's fiction and poetry has appeared in journals such as Still:The Journal, Kudzu, Open Mic, and The Louisville Review. She is currently working on her first collection of short stories which deal with the mental and emotional complexities of Appalachian women.
