Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

Bridging the digital divide; links, sites, resources and blogs to stimulate thought, identify resources and provide connections with other helping professionals in the Appalachian region. Counselors, social workers, therapists, marriage and family therapists and other helping professionals spend their days busily attending to client needs and are often unaware of how using digital media can benefit professionals, their agencies and their clients. Increased awareness of resources and their use by professionals in the helping fields can connect Appalachian helpers with public resources, bloggers who write about Appalachian identity and educational resources in the region. This un-conference session will discuss the importance of the Internet to Appalachian counselors, social workers, therapists, marriage and family therapists as well as members of the medical profession and suggest resources related to the Appalachian region and persons of Appalachian heritages. Digital references will be provided, including lists of links, websites and blogs by and for Appalachian persons in the helping professions. This un-conference session will educate and inform participants about how the digital world can benefit both helpers and clients in the Appalachian region.
