Woodson Wilderness Challenge

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

The Woodson Wilderness Challenge was a government program, operated by the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, in the western North Carolina mountains.The program served as an alternative to time served in Youth Detention Centers and provided youth with experiential education opportunities in the wilderness in order to develop trust, intrapersonal skills, and bonding within the group. This program, started in 1976, was closed in 2011 as a result of statewide budget cuts. This research seeks to examine the model of the Woodson Wilderness Challenge and its effectiveness in reducing recidivism rates in adjudicated youth.

Nora Jane Montgomery, from Louisville, Kentucky, graduated from Transylvania University with a dual degree in SociologyAnthropology and Spanish. She is currently a first year graduate student at Appalachian State University studying Appalachian Studies with a concentration in Sustainability.
