Session 7.09 (Appalachian Studies) The Art of Conferencing: Proposing, Presenting, and Politicking

Session Abstract or Summary

Y’ALL (the ASA committee for Young Appalachian Leaders & Learners), the Carl A. Ross Student Paper Award selection committee, and the ASA Education Committee introduce the new Y’ALL Professional Development Workshops Series.

The topic of this year's workshop is the Art of Conferencing. The session will include tips on finding CFPs, writing successful abstract and panel proposals, presenting papers, and networking with peers, senior colleagues, and editors. One new scholar will present a 10-minute paper on his scholarship. Respondents will discuss the strengths of the paper presentation as well as point out potential areas for improvement. Time will be reserved for discussing additional dimensions of successful conference participation, including selecting conferences, writing successful abstracts and panel proposals, and networking with peers, senior colleagues, and editors. Winners of the Ross Student Paper Award and the Teaching Excellence in Appalachian Studies award will be invited to join the conversation.
