Presentation #1 Title

The Musicality of the Mountains in Catloochee

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

My presentation will discuss Wayne Caldwell's novel, Cataloochee, and the dynamic role that the many mountains play in the fates of its characters. Wayne Caldwell ‘s Cataloochee beautifully presents both the people and the mountains of Appalachia. Caldwell’s lyrical descriptions of the mountains and landscapes in and around Appalachia, combined with his in-depth descriptions of his characters , create a musicality to his novel. Caldwell focuses on the interconnectedness between the people and their land. The land and mountains in the novel are dynamic forces: each changes and evolves throughout the play, shaping the characters’ fates. As a composer articulately chooses the correct note, so Caldwell carefully selects his diction, each phrase and description representing the power and majesty of the many mountains of Appalachia.
