Session 5.05 Economic Development

Session Abstract or Summary

Over the last six years, Berea College's Entrepreneurship for the Public Good Program has conducted action-research to promote economic develoment. This paper presented by EPG faculty and four students summaizes the work which includes community asset mapping, conversation with small business owners on ways to promote their goods and services through a "buy local" approach through social, local and mobile social media model. Finally, through customer discovery interviews, a program is summarized that links these strategies to the Kentucky Trail Town Program.

The purposes of this presentation includes: 1) A review of the small rural communities success in economic development and community revitalization stimulus in several Appalachian cities in the eastern United states, 2) A summary of the Kentucky River Area Development District (KRADD) case studies citing the cities and counties expressing their intentions to align with the Kentucky Trail Town Program, 3) A summary of the Berea College EPG students' experiences as adventure tourists and intercept interviewer with adventure tourists, 4) A summary of the observations of Berea small businesses and assessment of the value of social media for small businesses and travelers who could benefits from a Berea Trail Systems, and 5) Action recommendations to the civic leaders to consider submitting a letter of Application to the Kentucky Adventure Tourism Trail Town Program.

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #1

Dr. Peter H. Hackbert is the William & Kay Moore Chair in Entrepreneurship and Management, Director, the EPG Program. Prior to joining Berea College he was a visiting professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. From 2001-05 he directed the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at Sierra Nevada College at Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Hackbert was a founding and later a tenured professor at California State University Monterey Bay from 1996-2001. In all these assignments his programs have been recognized by peers including: Best University Cross Campus Program at UIUC 2007; Best CEO Chapter Advisor, 2nd Place 2008; Top 50 Régional Entrepreneurial Collèges 2003-2005; Best Teaching Practices, Award at USASBE 2003, and his most recently, the Excellence in Entrepreneurship Awards for Eastern and Southern Kentucky, Young Entrepreneur of Kentucky in 2012.
