Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

In this paper presentation the researchers will present their preliminary findings regarding pre-service teachers’ perceptions of rural Appalachian students. The significance of this qualitative study lies in its ability to disclose and describe pre-service teachers’ understanding of Appalachian students located in Appalachian Ohio. Participant narratives were obtained through interviews with pre-service teachers’ who are being prepared at a large 4-year University located in rural Appalachian Ohio. The research findings offer valuable insights into teacher preparation and field placements in rural Appalachian secondary schools. These research findings could potentially inform teacher educators, current and future teachers, educational policy makers, and school administrators, particularly in Appalachian states. Overall, the narratives reported in this study came from future teachers who have minimal field placements in rural Appalachian schools.
