Session Title

The Permeated Lyric

Session Abstract or Summary

"go in fear of abstractions..."

-from The Appalachian Book of the Dead by Charles Wright

These four writers from the West Virginia Wesleyan College low-residency MFA community write lyric poems that look beyond the touchable landscape of Appalachia to a more deeply buried emotional landscape inherent to the region. Inspired by Charles Wright and others, these poets look to free their own poems "from the stringencies of unity and closure demanded by the sort of poem most readers are used to" and "spin out extended meditations that pick up, work with, lay aside and return again to landscapes, historical events and ideas.”

Each panelist will read a representative selection of their original poetry and discuss how the lyric choices made in their work present Appalachian voices and landscapes in unexpected ways. During the final fifteen minutes of the session, the poets will engage one another and the audience in a conversation about how expected and unexpected images from their own regional experience permeate their work regardless of setting or subject.
