Fet, V. Otkrytye slova. Stikhi fevralia — dekabria 2024 [The Open Words. Poems from February—December 2024.]. Kyiv: Drukarskii dvir Oleha Fedorova. 2025. 284 p.
This book is a continuation of the series of the five previous books: Above the Abyss (2022), The Fabric of Memory (2022), The Light of Words (2023), The Outline Map (2024), аnd The Open Words (K.: Drukarskii dvir Oleha Fedorova). It includes poems written from January to August 2024. The nightmare of the last four years or so shows no signs of ending, and neither do the poems. We—our entire civilization—have entered a period of such uncertainty that the reflexive weaving of words may be nothing more than a form of meditation, a way to keep from going mad on the spot. As I look and listen closely, the stream of words spilling onto the page seems like a waterfall on the verge of running dry—its sources are dead, parched, and charred by searing shame… And increasingly, it seems I write in this language merely out of inertia. I can no longer see its past, let alone its future. I strongly suspect that we are the last generation to write poetry in Russian.
But if, with my incantation,
I can for a moment divert
the wandering eye from the Tower of Evil—
then let direct speech continue,
let it flow as it flowed before,
as Elohim did over the empty waters
at the start of the book about Earth’s fate—
a text we never managed to translate.
Glory to Ukraine!
