About Our Guest Artist

A native of Lithuania, clarinetist Sarunas Jankauskas enjoys a versatile performance career as a soloist, chamber, orchestral musician and contemporary music artist. His playing has been acknowledged for "notable precision and beauty," "exotic flair," "smooth and seductive delicacy" and for "bringing a rich tone to even the most breathlessly fast passages." Currently, he is the principal clarinetist of the Wichita Symphony and member of the Lieurance Woodwind Quintet.

Jankauskas has performed throughout the United States and Europe in a variety of concert settings. He has appeared as a concerto soloist with numerous ensembles, including Boulder Chamber Orchestra, Round Rock Symphony, Texas Festival Orchestra, The University of Texas at Austin and Wichita State University Symphony Orchestras. As a chamber musician he collaborated with St. Petersburg, Jasper and Aeolus String Quartets, Colette Valentine, Toby Blumenthal, Kris Becker and other accomplished artists. He has performed at such festivals and concert series as International Conservatory Week Festival in St. Petersburg (Russia), Spring of Harmony, SoundSpace at Blanton, Chamber Music At The Barn, Kaunas Contemporary Music Festival and participated in prestigious summer programs such as Sarasota Music Festival, New Music Workshop at Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Round Top Festival-Institute and Texas Music Festival.

Jankauskas is a prizewinner at Entergy Young Texas Artists, Kingsville International Young Artists, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Young Artists competitions as well as Round Top Festival-Institute, Butler School of Music and Grand Valley State University concerto competitions. As an enthusiastic performer of new music, he has collaborated with composers Richard Lavenda, Zack Stanton, Ethan F. Greene, Paul Kerekes, Brett Kroening, Arturas Bumsteinas, and currently is working on a series of commissions that focuses on duo works for clarinet and contrasting instrument or voice.

In 2012, Dr. Jankauskas joined the School of Music at Wichita State University as the Assistant Professor of Clarinet. Previously he served on faculty at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, TX. He started his formal musical studies at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and, after moving to the United States, received degrees from Grand Valley State University, Rice University and, most recently, from The University of Texas at Austin. His principal teachers include Dr. Arthur Campbell, Richard MacDowell, Dr. Michael Webster and Algirdas Budrys.
