Description

Cased image of Right Rev. Richard Vincent Whelan, Catholic Bishop of Wheeling, Va. (now W.Va.,) made in 1857. A Richmond, Va. newspaper article told the story of the capture of Bishop Whelan by Union troops, when he refused to raise the American flag over the church in 1861. He was quickly released. Ambrotypes, which were popular 1855-1865, came in hinged cases but in these there is a photographic emulsion that has been coated onto glass so they do not have that "shiny mirror" reflection (but, being on glass they are somewhat reflective). Ca. 1857, item # 2006.0703.156, 15 x 12 cm., cased.
