Description
This is a sketch of the campsite of the 2nd Alabama Infantry, CSA, near Fort Barrancas, Fla., from the diary of Pvt. James P. Stephens of the Cherokee Greys Company. Fort Pickens, controlled by the Union Army is shown at the top of the sketch. Stephens drew the sketch in May of 1861. Well-drawn sketches such as this one are rare in Confederate soldiers’ diaries, and make them extremely valuable. Ca. May, 1861, item # 2001.0703.08, the diary was recorded in a 7.5" x 12" ledger book.
