Abstract

Sarah Denman served as the provost and senior vice president of academic affairs for Marshall University. She worked with the university for 33 years, starting her career with the Marshall in 1975. Dr. Denman played a major role in various projects including the merger of the West Virginia Graduate College in the Charleston area as a part of Marshall, development of the Marshall Community and Technical college, and worked with State Senator Robert Plymale to start an new engineering program at Marshall, as well as many other projects that broadened Marshall’s available programs, it’s national accreditation, and the recognition of the university’s students and staff.Sa

William Denman was the Director of the Society of Yeager Scholars, Chair of the Department of Communication Studies, and Interim Director of the Integrated Science and Technology Program in the College of Science for Marshall University. Dr. Denman’s scholarship was focused on the role of rhetoric, as a human activity, in the shaping of societies. His publications dealt with the need for argument to be more heavily featured in the teaching of public speaking as a means of empowering citizens. In addition, he focused on the ways in which citizens worked, prior to World War II, to influence public opinion on American entry into the war in Europe.
