Workshop: Voices in the Appalachian Classroom

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

This workshop first examines the dialects that Appalachian students bring to the classroom, including the historical and social influences that shape them. We then turn to ways that elementary, secondary, and college level instructors can successfully teach standard written English in a culturally sensitive way that honors students' home voices using methods developed by the Appalachian Writing Project and discussed in the book Talking Appalachian (Clark & Hayward, UPK, 2013).

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #1

Amy Clark is Director of the Appalachian Writing Project and Assistant Professor English at University of Virginia's College at Wise. She is co-editor, with Nancy Hayward, of Talking Appalachian: Voice, Identity, and Community (University Press of KY, 2013).
