Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

This presentation reports the current findings on strategies and techniques used by nonprofit and grassroots organizations concerned with land use and resource issues in Appalachia. One question addressed is how Appalachia-based nonprofits employ mediated communication strategies and techniques to inform and engage fellow citizens, as part of planned communication campaigns. Both citizens living in Appalachia and those outside of the affected mountain communities are targeted audiences for nonprofit communication campaigns. Which mediated communication strategies have worked with “insider” stakeholders? Which strategies and techniques have been successful in encouraging engagement from non-community members? Lessons learned from these nonprofits and grassroots organizations are applicable to other grassroots groups and more formal organizations.
