Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

The cultures and heritages of Appalachia have created unique and distinct cultural values and phenomena that impact the people who live in the Appalachian region. Helping professionals in the field of mental health and wellness often either misunderstand or do not appreciate these cultural factors and therefore they miss out on important opportunities for growth and change in persons who are of Appalachian heritages. Those misunderstandings, lack of cultural awareness and dearth of consideration for the cultural values of Appalachia often lead to ineffective treatment modalities, poor relationships between helper and client and poor treatment outcomes for agencies and private practices alike. This workshop will discuss the values of the Appalachian cultures, implications for helping professionals and strategies for effective intervention and agency planning.
