Labor and Delivery; Melodies Inspired by Appalachia

Inspiration can come in many different forms, but inspiration without communication remains expressionless. A private, unaccompanied act, with no vehicle for conveyance or mode of articulation. Some consider music the universal language, and therein lies the beauty of setting inspiration to musical tune. In this sense music becomes a conversation; a public conversation when shared with others, and a private conversation when musician and instrument are alone. My time in Appalachia has inspired many of these “conversations”… haunting melodies played on the violin. The inspiration is Appalachia as a whole – the landscape, the animals, the people and the food. With musical influences ranging from Bach to Bill Monroe, the music represents an expression of emotion in ways words never can. Expressing inspiration through music can serve another purpose as well…remembrance. A musical strain can recall instant memories, resurrecting long-lost sentiments. Day by day Appalachia continues to inspire; my hope is that these inspirations continue to become musical conversations that can be shared with others.
