Blackwater Canyon: Portrait of the Wild Lands
Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary
This presentation will include a screening of “Blackwater Canyon: Portrait of the Wild Lands,” a 30 minute documentary film that explores the discovery, settlement and industrial history of the Blackwater Canyon, an area nestled in the heart of the Allegheny Mountains. This region in particular, with its wealth of natural resources and spectacular beauty, has been at the center of environmental controversy for over a century and serves today as a reminder of the delicate balance between nature and industry. The film features a heartfelt rendition of “The West Virginia Hills” by West Virginia singer and songwriter, John Lilly. A panel discussion will follow with the filmmakers, Leann Hughes-Price and Andrew Price.

Leann Hughes-Price is a native of Charleston, West Virginia and holds an M.A. in Media Studies from West Virginia State University. Mrs. Price is a graduate student in the Marshall University Doctoral Program in Education with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction.
