Jefferson Furnace: Oak Hill’s Contribution to the Civil War

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

Jefferson Furnace opened as a furnace for the generation of metals to support the nation’s growing industrial needs. It began production in 1854 near Oak Hill, Ohio and ceased production in 1916. Local legend says metal from this plant was used in the reinforcement of the Ironclad warship the Monitor. This presentation will document the life story of the Jefferson Furnace using local source materials and historical documents.

Brandon Coon is a Secondary Social Studies Major at the University of Rio Grande. He is a native of Jackson County Ohio and still resides there. His research interests are local Ohio History and comic book preservation.
