Presentation #1 Title

John Ehle- “A Man to Match Our Mountains”

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

The primary research question for my Senior Seminar paper for my English major is: How do John Ehle’s depictions of recurring family dynamics in novels involving the Wright and King families explore the tensions between traditional agrarian life and the forces of modernization and industrialization in Western North Carolina History? The main attention is on the Ehle Depression Era novels The Winter People, The Last One Home, and The Lion on the Hearth. The strength of the storytelling draws the reader into the family conflicts and moral issues they must resolve. Ehle sets the challenge for his characters to be epic in their strength and match the Appalachian Mountains which also shape them. The resilience of Appalachian people also is addressed in “Love Affairs and Family Feuds in the Smoky Mountains, An Ehle review” by Jonathon Yardley, North Carolina Literary Review number 19, 2010. The topic title is based on the original motto of Buncombe County NC “Men to Match Our Mountains”. John Ehle is a native of Asheville, North Carolina the seat of Buncombe County. Secondary I will present information supporting the need to recognize contributions John Ehle has made to education in North Carolina beyond his literary works As an advisor to NC Governor Terry Sanford, Ehle was the brain that created the North Carolina Governor’s School and North Carolina School of the Arts. This ties into the big picture involved in the “Extreme need” in Appalachia for stronger education and the perseverance needed to make it survive.
