Presentation #1 Title

Students Addressing Community Health Concerns near the Radford Army Ammunition Plant

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

In response to ongoing community concerns regarding potential environmental effects of the Radford Army Ammunition Plant on human health, Virginia Tech students collaborated with Pulaski County Board of Supervisors and Montgomery County Board of Supervisors to provide additional information about the presence of pollutants. In conjunction with the Appalachian Teaching Project, students worked with faculty in engineering, public health, and sociology to catalogue residents’ concerns about the Radford arsenal, complete a literature review, translate the results of pilot projects testing air and soil, and communicate results in an effort to increase residents’ understanding of scientific appraisals of RAAP’s environmental effects. Students will discuss the challenges of working with, and retaining credibility with, multiple partners.
