The effects of poverty, family structure, and educational attainment in Appalachia are well documented in the literature. Increasingly, educational literature promotes the necessity for increasing emotional intelligence and social-emotional learning at all pedagogical levels. This research analyzes the potential that teaching emotions may have in relation to poverty, family structure, and educational attainment in rural Appalachia.

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #1

Michael C. Melton is currently the Athletic Administrator at Letcher County Central High School in rural southeastern Kentucky. He did his doctoral work in emotional intelligence at Morehead State University. He graduated with his Ed.D in P-12 Educational Leadership in May 2016. His research interest besides emotional intelligence are history, Appalachian History, educational leadership, and Appalachian religion.
