Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary
Gotterblick Poster: Forest management, as a profession, developed in Germany, where scarcity for wood combined with confinement to Central Europe for obtaining wood…rather than being able to exploit forest resources globally as the other European powers were able to do. The cultural and spiritual underpinnings of the developing forestry profession can be seen in the term “Gotterblick”; which literally translates to “God’s insights” and was used to mean “forester’s belief” or method, for managing forests and in the Germanic “right to roam” laws which allowed all people to access forests to forage for berries, mushrooms, etc.. Thus a strong sense of ownership, as well as responsibility, for the use and care of forests is a widespread cultural phenomenon which serves as an example not only in engendering a love for forests for their utility, but for their aesthetics and the people’s well-being.
