McMillan, William, 1777-1832

McMillan (sometimes spelled “M’Millan”) was born in Appalachia, in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, and spent much of his life within the region. He received a degree from Jefferson College in Canonsburg (now Washington & Jefferson College in Washington) in 1802 and went on to serve as the school’s president from 1817-1822. He was also the first president of Franklin College in New Athens, Ohio, a position he held from 1825-1832.

Additional information can be found in McMillan’s Wikipedia page.

The User Guide for the Library of Appalachian Preaching is a Google Sheet that can be searched, sorted, and downloaded for offline use.

At the moment, McMillan has only one sermon in the Library; it has a Guide of its own so the records will be complete. It includes the title, sermon text, date and place the sermon was preached, and so on. This information is available in the master list of sermons as well.

This sermon, on 1 Corinthians 9:14, appeared in the December 1836 issue of the Pittsburgh-based Presbyterian Preacher. McMillan had passed away in 1832, the “byline” identifies him as the “Late president of Franklin College, Ohio” (p. 113).
