Abstract

This collection is composed of six reels of microfilm purchased from the National Archives catalogue of microfilmed government records. The reel title is as follows: “Letters Received by the Office of the Adjutant General Main Series, 1871-1880”. The material on the reels was originally taken from the following government record group: Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1780's-1917, Record Group 94. The reels are reel numbers 238, 264, 271, 273, 314, 388. Reel 238 concerns papers relating to military expeditions against the Sioux Indians in the Big Horn, Powder River, and Yellowstone River areas, Nov. 1875 - July 1876. Reel 264 concerns papers relating to the charge by Gen. George Crook that Col. Joseph J. Reynolds and Capt. Alexander Moore failed to carry out orders in an attack on the village of Chief Crazy Horse near Powder River, Mont, in Mar. 1876, and the subsequent general courts-martial of Reynolds and Moore. Reel 271 concerns papers relating to the allocation of certain lands in Tampa, Fla., as a military reservation to be known as Fort Brooke, 1876-78. Included are reports of disputed surveys of boundary lines and a map of the fort as surveyed in 1875. Correspondence relating to Gen. George Crook's battle with the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians under Chief Crazy Horse at Rosebud Creek, Mont., June 1876. Correspondence relating to the claim of Young Joseph and his band of Nez Perce' Indians to the Wallowa Valley, Oreg., the appointment of a commission to negotiate with Young Joseph, and the removal of this band of Indians to the reservation at Boise, Idaho, 1876-77. Reel 273 concerns papers relating to the defeat of Gen. George A. Custer and his whole command by Sitting Bull's band of Sioux Indians in the battle on the Little Big Horn River, Mont., June 25-26, 1876. Reel 314 contains the annual report for 1876 for the Department of Dakota and the Department of Texas. Reel 388 contains the annual report for 1877 for the Department of Dakota.
