Abstract

The Sloan-Wyatt family papers mainly center around the marriage of Charles Russell Wyatt (Sr) and Sarah Paisley Sloan-Wyatt. The bulk of the collection is related to Sarah P. Sloan-Wyatt, her children Morton Sloan Wyatt-Davis, Joseph Willard Wyatt, and Charles Russell Wyatt (Jr), her brother Charles Wortham Sloan, and her parents Capt. John Alexander Sloan and Mary Morton Wortham-Sloan

This collection consists of 13 boxes, 136 folders, and measures approximately 7 linear feet. There are two full Hollinger boxes, 9 half Hollinger boxes, a quarter Hollinger box, and a small multipurpose box. The collection contains personal and professional correspondence, business and legal documents, paraphernalia from various groups and organizations, the family’s personal work in literature and art, educational records and personal interests, travel paraphernalia, personal journals, photographs, and artifacts like wedding slippers form the 1800s.

The dates of this collection span 1841-1938 though the bulk of the collection is between 1930-1970.

Correspondence between family members and businesses and journals constitute the core of this collection. Most correspondence was conducted by either Charles Russell Wyatt (Jr.), Charles Wortham Sloan, or Joseph Willard Wyatt. The bulk of the collection regarding organizations is comprised of Mary Morton Wortham-Sloan’s documents for The Women’s Club and her daughter Sarah P. Sloan-Wyatt’s documents relating to the United Daughters of the Confederacy. A significant portion of the collection is the family’s personal literary works that include poetry and stories, but a large portion also consists of the artwork and journals of Morton Sloan Wyatt-Davis.
