Measuring Outcomes: Results of a Five-Year Partnership Between Milligan College and Appalachia Service Project

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

In this panel, four presenters will share the results of an ongoing partnership between Appalachia Service Project and Milligan College to assess program outcomes. Appalachia Service Project (ASP) has been providing a ministry of rehabilitation of substandard housing in central Appalachia for more than forty years. ASP hosts annually 17,000 volunteers to make 600-700 homes in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia safer, drier and warmer. In 2009, ASP partnered with Milligan College faculty members and students to assess the effects of this ministry on both the residents whose homes are repaired, as well as on the thousands of volunteers who come each year to work for a week. Pre and post-test measurements have been done with both residents and volunteers to assess various changes, including mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. In this group presentation, four individuals who have been involved in this collaboration will share their findings and perspectives. The benefits to both ASP and Milligan will be described along with tips for how to form similar community-based research partnerships. In addition, results of the research from the last five years will be shared. This presentation would be useful for any organization or college that is considering a similar collaboration or for anyone interested in the results of our work.
