Living and Dying in Appalachia: Four short films

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

This group will present fours short films about living and dying in Appalachia. Death in The Moment: The role of life and death in Appalachian Culture is a video documentary that focuses on the process of dying. The film includes interviews from medical doctors, funeral directors, priests, and scholars about the fear of death. The film discusses Appalachian traditions of funerals and religious rights. The Calling: A Buddhist nun’s journey from Korea to North Carolina. This film documents the journey of Won Gong. It reveals the challenges of women in religion. It also chronicles her calling to build a Buddhist temple in Appalachia. 3 D’s: Drugs, Domestic Violence and Death is a narrative film that follows the life of a couple from birth to death. It focuses on the themes of drugs, domestic violence and death. Faces of Discrimination: African Americans in Eastern Kentucky is a collection of interviews and commentary by black students and scholars about their struggles to obtain equality in Appalachia.
