Presentation #1 Title

Froma White Hall to Bacon Hollow-Songcatching in the Blue Ridge

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

White Hall and Bacon Hollow are two small mountain communities that cover the Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. While Cecil Sharp, Paul Worthington and even Bob Dylan passed through the area to hear the rich musical traditions, it was George Foss, member of the National Symphony Orchestra, who collected the stories behind the songs. This in depth collecting of songs instead of "strip mining" of materials resulted in a cross section of collected knowledge that captured the place as well as the music of the Virginia mountaineers.

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #1

Margaret Marangione teaches American Literature, composition and in an Appalachian Learning Community. Her research interests are on the culture and history of the Virginia Mountaineers who were removed from their mountain home to make way for the Shenandoah National Park.
