Presentation #1 Title

Collaborative Helping: Meeting People Where They Are with Supports for Change

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

The Appalachian region is experiencing an epidemic of prescription drug abuse that is unprecedented. Integrated Services of Appalachian Ohio is partnering with regional addiction treatment and primary care professionals to develop an approach that is consistent with health care reform trends toward patient centered medical homes. We are creating a Health Priority Alliance to rise to the challenge. Using a practice frame work called Collaborative Helping, we are piloting new ways to “meet people where they are” both in the primary care setting and throughout the community with a more holistic approach to health. Physicians, behavioral health professionals and health system leaders are all pitching in to confront prescription drug abuse. Kevin will present progress and share future planning for our Health Priority Alliance. The Collaborative Helping framework will be fully described through stories and anecdotes.

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #1

Kevin Gillespie has over 30 years of experience combining direct service, system development and administration throughout Appalachian Ohio. He is a registered nurse focused on creating innovative service solutions with partners across public service systems and in alliance with therapeutic, housing and employment professionals. Along with responsibilities as Executive Director of Integrated Services, Kevin has recently become involved with addiction treatment colleagues on a practice framework for integrated primary care. He and writing partner, Bill Madsen, have completed a new book entitled Collaborative Helping following Bill’s work, Collaborative Therapy with Multi-Stressed Families (Guilford, 2nd Edition). The book will be published by Wiley sometime in early 2014. Kevin is working with addiction professionals and others to define an approach to “meet people where they are” with supports for change in the face of an overwhelming Appalachian prescription drug abuse problem.
