Autoethnography of an Appalasian

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

Reflection of life as a biracial Caucasian and Asian born in early the 50's and living in Appalachia throughout an entire life is the focus of this paper. Examination of the blending of cultures and assimilation into the Appalachian culture will be addressed along with historical information regarding the attitudes of biracial unions and how the census refused to acknowledge biracial individuals for many years.

Dr. Miki Crawford is a professor of Communication Studies at Ohio University Southern Campus. She is the coauthor of "Japanese War Brides in American: An Oral History." The first story in this book is about her Japanese mother and her father who was from West Virginia.
