Risky Parenting in Appalachian Families: Problems and Solutions
Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary
This presentation will review common practices and misconceptions regarding Appalachian parenting strategies. The primary goal will be to address misconceptions about parenting practices in Appalachia, while simultaneously exploring how common mental health problems and geographical characteristics of the region contribute to child maltreatment and neglect. The presentation will seek to clarify that parenting practices unique to rural regions are not in themselves abusive or neglectful. However, the presentation will address common social and mental health issues as potential risk factors for maltreatment. These risk factors will be explored, with a focus on outreach and remediation of problems.

Jason Weaver is a recent graduate of the Marshall University Psy.D. Program. He is currently employed in South Charleston, WV with Hudson and Associates. His practice interest areas include forensic evaluation and evaluation of parenting skills.
