Inter-generational community reflection via the Clinch River Oral History Project

This presentation will utilize images, field recordings and multiple perspectives to illuminate the process behind the Clinch River Oral History Project. At the crux of this process is the provision of training, guidance and support for a group of high school students who are conducting and transcribing oral histories in their community and then writing and performing an outdoor drama based on their interviews.

Willie Dodson, a native of Virginia's Southside and New River Valley, is currently serving as a VISTA for the Clinch River Valley Initiative with projects in Wise, Russell, Scott and Tazewell Counties in Southwest Virginia. Prior to earning a degree in Appalachian Studies from Berea College in 2013, Dodson spent six years working as an organizer and folk musician most-often associated with Mountain Justice and the Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards in Wise County, Va.
