Session Title

Session 4.14 Environment

Session Abstract or Summary

In this workshop, KSEC and WV-YAL organizers will expand on the structure and strategy of issue-based statewide youth networks, discuss the challenges and benefits of statewide networks, and instruct participants how to launch networks in their own states.

The Kentucky Student Environmental Coalition (KSEC) and West Virginia Youth Action League (WV-YAL), founded in 2007, are the state networks of the Student Environmental Action Coalition.

These state networks provide direct mentorship for a diversity of projects at individual schools (hub & spoke model), provide networked support for campuses that run similar campaigns (snowflake model) and provide support for statewide campaigns (committee/working group model).

Moderators will relate the successes and shortfalls of various campaigns attempting to build solidarity between students across a large geographic area. In the interactive portion of the workshop, moderators will work with participants to demonstrate how to identify and reach out to potential chapter organizations, brainstorm sources of support and funding, and build a unified network from existing groups.
