Session Abstract or Summary
Contemporary Appalachian Fiction from Bottom Dog Press will present 3 contemporary fiction writers discussing their idea of contemporary Appalachian fiction and then reading from their most recent novel or story collection. Charles Dodd White, editor of Degrees of Elevation: Contemporary Appalachian Fiction, a much used collection, and author of Sinners of Sanction County: Stories will lead. He will be followed by Julia Watts, author of Gifted and Talented: A Novel which treats an unmarried couple and their struggles with class bias in the school system of Tennessee. Joseph G. Anthony will present from his novel Wanted: Good Family which treats racism and class understand in the South. All three are well established writers who know and write about Appalachia. Larry Smith, editor of Bottom Dog Press can serve as moderator.

A native of southeastern Kentucky, Julia Watts is the author of the Lambda Literary Award-winning Finding H.F. and many other works including lesbian romance, erotica and young teen paranormal. Watts is a two-time recipient of grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women and recently completed an M.F.A. in Writing from Spalding University. She lives, writes and teaches in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Charles Dodd White lives in the mountains of western North Carolina. He is a recipient of the Jean Ritchie Fellowship for Appalachian Writing and has been awarded an individual artist's grant from the North Carolina Arts Council. He is author of the novels, A SHELTER OF OTHERS (2014), LAMBS OF MEN (2010), and the story collection, SINNERS OF SANCTION COUNTY (2011). His work has appeared in Red Holler: Contemporary Appalachian Writing, Appalachian Heritage, The Louisville Review, North Carolina Literary Review, The Rumpus, Tusculum Review and others. He is at work on a new novel.
