Session 10.13 Education
Session Abstract or Summary
The Haldeman After School Program in Rowan County, Kentucky is a collaborative effort by community and university volunteers to offer enrichment activities for local elementary school children in a safe, child-centered environment close to home. Various arts based activities, including music, visual art, and drama, are provided four days a week to child kindergarten through fifth grade. These children come from diverse backgrounds in regards to their family and home life, social abilities, and overall self-esteem. In the area of music, folk songs are an essential tool in music education at all levels, but especially at the elementary level. These songs aid in the development of vocal skills and the elements of music. At the same time, education about the history of a country or region is also achieved. We will be leading a workshop that will show how to teach folk songs effectively and integrate age appropriate discussion about the history of the song and area.
