Presentation #1 Title

Cultural Resilience in Appalachia; A Deeper Look into the Benefits of Appalachian Cultural Values

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

Throughout generations, Appalachia has maintained cultural values that are prominent among its people. These values have managed to permeate sub-regions, subcultures, and modernity. Because of this, the Appalachian culture remains one of the few in-tact cultures within the United States. Nevertheless, the knowledge base that supports these values as hallmarks of the culture is limited. Using the cultural values explored by Loyal Jones (1994), this research paper explores the values through voices of resilient people who call the region home. Using a cultural resilience model, this research highlights some of the songs of strengths sung by those who have overcome major life barriers because of their cultural values. This session will uplift those who are from the culture as well as those who are not, giving them insight into the ten major values that hold this region together and make it one of the most unique and positive places to live in the country. Come and explore what makes people from Appalachia resilient, friendly, independent, and fun, among other things.
