A program for training professionals coming to the Appalachian Region
Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary
This is a "how to" presentation, outlining an orientation program in regional values and sensitivities for medical providers, administrators and other professional newcomers to Southern Appalachia. The program has been developed and tweaked over a 40-year career in the region, and was presented to some 400 people in Appalachian North Carolina in 2014. The presentation is being given in the hope that some audience members will take the program for use in their home communities.

Since 1980 Tom Plaut has trained staff members of the Hot Springs Health Program in Madison County and the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) in Asheville. He retired from teaching sociology at Mars Hill University in 2005 and now works in health care issues for Pisgah Legal Services. He co-chairs the Appalachian Studies Committee at UNC-Asheville’s College for Seniors.
