Meditation in the Holler: Practical Exercises to Help Children in Distress

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

This presentation will explore the potential benefits of meditation exercises for children experiencing stress, especially those with common psychological problems/disorders, such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, and trauma. A brief overview of the biological components of these conditions and the ways in which meditation may have a positive impact on developing minds and bodies will be introduced. Implications of meditation activities for children participating in an after school program in Eastern Kentucky (k-5) will be discussed, including which exercises seem most effective and the children’s own self-evaluation of their benefit.

Sarah Shepherd is an Undergraduate Research Fellow and Junior Psychology major at Morehead State University with a passion for helping people help themselves. She has worked as a student coordinator with the Haldeman After School Program for four semesters and as a camp counselor with 4-H in Floyd County for the past nine years.
