The Presidential Election of 1940 in Appalachia
Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary
The purpose of this paper will be to provide a comprehensive account of the presidential election of 1940 in Appalachia. The 1940 presidential race involved a spirited contest between two term incumbent, Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Republican Wendell Willkie. When all the ballots were counted, Roosevelt carried the Appalachia portions of the eleven states extending from Pennsylvania to Alabama. Special emphasis will be placed on Roosevelt's electoral victories in thirty-three of the thirty-six urban counties in Appalachia and the numerous coal counties in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Also, the paper will analyze Willkie's impressive performances in East Tennessee, Southeastern Kentucky, and the fourteen counties clustered in the northern part of Pennsylvania.
