Opportunities and New Directions for Small Farming in East Tennessee

Preface: This paper looks at the nature of markets for small-farming in rural east Tennessee. It discusses the social and economic implications of the foodways and the opportunities for expanding support for small farming. Abstract Appalachia’s tradition of small part-time farming practices is a model for a number of emerging economic and social trends linked to food, health, and cultural preservation. The focus of this paper is on understanding the markets and cultural practices currently supporting family and truck farming in Grainger County in rural upper east Tennessee. The paper draws on GIS technology to offer a better understanding of the scope of agricultural markets and their implications for expanding the role of small-scale food produced in the region.
