October 19, 2014 PROPOSAL – PAPER APPALACHIAN STUDIES CONFERENCE, 2015 Glenna H. Graves, Ph.D. Lindsey Wilson College A Consideration of Ranciere’s ideas on “Politics” and Protest for Appalachian Studies This paper will explore the implications of Jacques Ranciere’s thinking about power, protest, and identity vis a vis Appalachian Studies. The paper will include a discussion of John Gaventa’s and James Scott’s work, and recent scholarship. The paper will revolve around the topics of indigenous studies, culture and mentalite, protest, and identity. The goal of the paper is two-fold: continue the discussion for developing effective protests against Mountaintop Removal; and, more generally, assess the uses of celebrating identity personally and collectively.
