Invocation of Appalachia: Observations of Old-time Music in Barcelona

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

Outside the heart of the region of Appalachia, there are gathering places that foster moments in time where people are able to come together and share notion of Appalachia and Appalachian roots music. With this poster session, we will be looking at representations of Appalachia inside these alternative spaces.

Our poster will focus on reflections on the experience of attending the Al Das Bluegrass and Old-time Festival in Barcelona, Spain in the fall of 2017. We seek to foster appreciation and understanding of Appalachian experiences on an international level. We hope to build beneficial relationship between musicians and culture-makers internationally with an organization dedicated to promotion of traditional Appalachian music.
