McGuffey Readers and Early Readers Today

Presentation #1 Title

Revisiting McGuffey Readers and Their Relevance Today

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

McGuffey Readers were found in many schools, especially one room schools, across Appalachia in the late 19th and early 20th century. Using the actual McGuffey Primer used in Meigs County Ohio and Mason County WV in the late 1890s as a source, this paper presentation will compare the first words learned in the McGuffy Primer with the expected first words learned in Kindergarten today for similarity and difference in content. The intent would be to see if McGuffey's first words in reading acquisition and development are pertinent and in alignment with those same first reading expectations today.

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #1
