Session Title
A reading from Pine Mountain Sand & Gravel Volume 21: Appalachia Acting Up
Session Abstract or Summary
Pine Mountain Sand & Gravel is the literary journal of the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative. Founded in the mid-1980s, the journal gives voice to a wide range of Appalachian writers. Over the last decade or so, we have been pleased to offer an annual reading from our newest issue at ASA, bringing new writers to the attention of the association, and the association to the attention of our writers. The theme of this issue, Appalachia Acting Up, seems particularly relevant. There is a great deal of fear raging throughout our country these days. One of the most compelling fears is that divergence will be repressed and divergent voices will be silenced. But the diversity of Appalachian voices will never be totally silenced, not as long as there are writers like these willing to speak –and act—up. We hope you will join us for a lively reading from—and a livelier discussion about— Pine Mountain Sand & Gravel Volume 21: Appalachia Acting Up” We request the hour and fifteen minute full session. Technical needs are a microphone with speaker for readers.
