Session Abstract or Summary
This session would be a screening and possibly a brief discussion of the documentary film, HILLBILLY, which is 84 minutes in length. HILLBILLY is a documentary directed by Ashley York and Sally Rubin that focuses on stereotypes about rural people, particularly as represented in movies, TV, and other visual media, and the part that played in the recent presidential election. The film allows Appalachians themselves to tell their stories and features people like Jerry Williamson, bell hooks, Silas House, Meredith McCarroll, Amethyst Kiah, Emily Satterwhite, members of the Appalachian Media Institute, Barbara Ellen Smith, Jason Howard, Sam Cole, Chad Berry, Frank X Walker, Crystal Goode, and many others.
