Advocacy, Opposition and Self Perceptions: A Case Study

This session will describe a fight led by local, largely blue-collar citizens of a town outside of Asheville against a well-funded and politically powerful developer’s proposal to build a 21-unit housing scheme on a three-acre plot bordering a community park heavily used by economically and culturally diverse groups. The paper will focus on changes of participant perceptions of self and of treatment by officials over the course of the controversy.

Tom Plaut has taught regional studies and the sociology of community health. since 1972. A founder and a past president of the ASA, he retired from Mars Hill University 2005 but continues to train medical providers in cultural sensitivity, as well as serve as the board treasurer for the Appalachian Mountain Community Health Centers. He provides data analysis for the Madison County Heath Department and health care counseling for Pisgah Legal Services in Asheville.
