Cross Disciplinary Appalachian Studies in The High School
Session Abstract or Summary
As a school, Madison Early College High School came together to make the reality of a school wide project that demonstrated that all curriculum we teach ties to regional studies in one way or another. This is a roundtable discussion in which a sample of the teachers who participated share their experience and findings while working on this project. Each presenter will present his/her unique experience in tying the curriculum of his/her individual subject matter with the goal of this over all project.

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #1
Linda Amons is a licensed secondary math teacher in for North Carolina for the past 17 years and has been a math instructor at Madison Early College since it's inception in 2008. She is the current statistics instructor and also teaches classes at Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College.

Julie Young
At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #2
Julie Young is an English teacher at Madison Early College High School with 28 years of experience in secondary education in Western North Carolina and Mississippi. In addition to teaching English, Julie serves as an Instructional Coach for her school. She represents Madison County Schools as Teacher of the Year this year and received the honor of Teacher of the Year for North Buncombe Middle School in 2014. She is a National Board Certified teacher in English early adolescence. She obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees in English Literature from the University of Southern Mississippi where she studied primarily British Literature (master's thesis on the Bronte sisters) and MS authors like Faulkner and Welty.

Erin Long
At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #3
Erin Ingle Long has been teaching high school English since 2009 and this is her 7th year at Madison Early College High School. She earned her undergraduate degree in English composition from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA in 1992 and her masters in teaching from Western Carolina University in 2009. She is National Board Certified in English for grades 9-12.

Eben Reigle

Eben Reigle has been teaching for seven years and is the current Spanish Teacher at Madison Early College. He holds a Masters of Education from Mars Hill College and a bachelors in Social Studies Education from Florida International University.

Leslie Schoof
At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #5
Leslie Schoof is a biology and physical science teacher at Madison Early College High School. She has been teaching for twenty years and has been using Project Based Learning (PBL) in her classroom for three years. She is currently participating in the Southern Appalachian Learning Collaborative, a group focused on developing PBL lessons for other teachers and she also co-leads her school's professional learning communities discussions on PBL.

Oshen Wallin
At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #6
Oshen Leigh Wallin earned her Bachelors of Science in Environmental Science at Catawba College in 2003 and earned her Teaching Certificate in Secondary Science at Western Carolina in 2010 as an Lateral Entry teacher. She received National Board Certification in Teaching Adolescents and Young Adults in Space and Earth Science in 2017. Prior to her teaching career, she worked with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service for 7 years gaining field experience and earning various certifications while working for the agency and during undergraduate studies.
