Abstract

This paper will seek to examine the historical and political factors at play in the origin and rise of the Brazilian criminal organization and drug cartel the Red Commando. The analysis will focus on the impact of the surrounding context of Brazilian political unrest on the creation and eventual dominance of the organization, and it will also take into account the crucial broader political context of the Cold War and United States foreign policy during that era.
