This volume compiles memoirs and research information about the unique Badkhyz Natural Reserve, now in Turkmenistan, formerly at the southernmost point of the USSR. Established in 1941, the Reserve—nicknamed a Serengeti of Central Asia— housed many unique and endangered species, with an iconic wild ass, or kulan, preserved only there. The book is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Reserve and the 90th birthday of Yuri Gorelov (1931—2018), an extraordinary naturalist who worked in Badkhyz in 1956—1978. His own documentary stories, a brief autobiography, other biographic materials, and a full list of research publications, are included, as well as an account of the famous Russian journalist Yuri Rost about Gorelov and his role in protection of nature. The book includes memoires of field biologists who worked at Badkhyz as resident or visiting researchers. Among them are contributions by prominent Russian zoologists of the older generation (Evgeny Panov, Nikolai Drozdov, etc.); detailed accounts of field work in Turkmenistan with Gorelov in the 1980s-1990s (Viktor Lukarevsky, Gertrud Neumann-Denzau, Alexander Gorbunov, Alexander Druk, etc.). We give witness’ memories of those for whom Gorelov was a role model in their youth (е.g. Nadezhda Skalon, Victor Fet). An important angle is added by those who were employed at Badkhyz serving at remote stations (Viktor Krivokhatsky, Vladimir Krupko). Other contributions cover field adventures in Badkhyz, stories of its nature and people by those who worked with snakes (Vladimir Cherlin, Valery Zherdev), birds (Nikolai Bogatyrev), insects (Mikhail Chernyakhovsky, Askar Akhatov), by visiting students and researchers from Moscow, Leningrad, and other places. Besides Gorelov, we honor those enthusiasts whose lives were indelibly touched by Badkhyz, such as filmmakers Vladimir Akhmedov and Vladimir Potapov, and an archaeologist German Ivanov. The account of the rise and demise of large animals of Badkhyz, focusing on tragedy of the spectacular kulan, is given. The book is intended for everyone who is interested in history of science and conservation in Central Asia and the USSR.

Заповедник, который часто называли «Серенгети Средней Азии», был основан в 1941 г. для охраны многих редких видов животных, прежде всего дикого осла – кулана. Книга посвящена 80-летию заповедника и 90-летию Юрия Горелова (1931—2018), замечательного натуралиста, работавшего в Бадхызе в 1956—1978 гг. В сборник включены его собственные невыдуманные истории, краткая биография, другие биографические материалы, полный список научных публикаций Горелова, а также очерк о Горелове знаменитого российского журналиста Юрия Роста. Воспоминания и фотографии, вошедшие в книгу, предоставили полевые биологи, работавшие в Бадхызе постоянно или в экспедициях. Среди них —видные российские зоологи старшего поколения (Евгений Панов, Николай Дроздов и др.), исследователи, работавшие в поле с Гореловым в 1980-1990-х гг. (Виктор Лукаревский, Александр Горбунов, Гертруд Нойманн-Дензау, Александр Друк и др.); свидетельства тех, для кого Горелов был ролевой моделью в их юности (Надежда Скалон, Виктор Фет). Важную перспективу дают материалы тех, кто работал на удалëнных кордонах заповедника (Виктор Кривохатский, Владимир Крупко). Другие воспоминания о работе в Бадхызе, о его природе и людях – от тех, кто занимался змеями (Владимир Черлин, Валерий Жердин), птицами (Николай Богатырев), насекомыми (Михаил Черняховский, Аскар Ахатов), от приезжавших на практику студентов из Москвы, Ленинграда и т.д. Помимо Горелова, мы отдаëм должне памяти других, чья жизнь была тесно связана с Бадхызом – это кинооператоры Владимир Ахмедов и Владимир Потапов, археолог Герман Иванов. Мы даëм краткий обзор взлëта и падения численности копытных, и прежде всего трагической истории кулана в Бадхызе. Книга рассчитана на всех, кто интересуется историей науки и охраны природы в Средней Азии и СССР.
